The PDF Version
of this Web Site

For off-line viewing we currently have a PDF (portable document file) version for the following site:

And we are in the process of producing PDFs for other sites -

The currently available PDF contains all of the documents, charts, diagrams, and graphics that appear on the original web-page, in a nearly identical format - including the front page, table of contents, and index. It also comes with all of the features displayed in the original web-page

  • the same intra-document hypertext links as appear in the documents on the web-page, designed to facilitate ease of navigation within each paper, so that it may be quickly scanned and over-viewed;
  • hypertext links that facilitates quick travel back and forth between each footnote and the body of text with which the footnote is associated;
  • cross-document links that permit the reader to explore related points in separate documents; and
  • a table of contents and an index on key terms - both hypertexted, to make navigating the web page as easy as possible.

In addition to these features, and to the advantages associated with viewing a 'locally' stored document off-line (increased speed in loading and viewing documents and in traveling cross-document links, decreased on-line costs, and increased ease in printing), the PDF version includes features that are not available on the web-page:

  • an option that permits the user to simultaneously search all of the documents in the anthology on a particular word or name specified by the user;
  • a split-frame presentation that permits the reader to view a hypertexted table of contents of the entire anthology in a slender column on the left-hand side of the screen while at the same time viewing any particular document on the main part of the screen.
  • the capacity to print any document in part or in whole. (In contrast, in order to get a hard copy of any specific page of a given document on the web, one must print the entire document!); and
  • a substantially decreased file size (due to the file compression process used in creating a 'pdf' file), requiring less room for storage than would be necessary were one to download the web-page for viewing.

For viewing the PDF file it is not necessary to have a modem, a web browser, an internet service provider - or to be connected to the internet in any fashion whatsoever. The PDF file may be viewed using the Adobe's free 'Acrobat Reader 3.01', once that software has been installed on your computer. If you do have Navigator 3.0 (or higher), however, or a compatible browser, and have installed the reader 'plug-in', you may view the PDF file directly with the browser, by opening the PDF file using the browser's 'open file in browser' feature. PDF files are readable in all three 'platforms' - Windows, Mac, and Unix.
